Septoplasty; The Facts behind it

Have you heard of septoplasty? According to research findings, about 80% of individuals in the world have a deviated septum. Most people may not experience or show any symptoms, but they may need to see a medical professional relieve them.

Well, if you have a deviated septum that causes severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, you might consider having septoplasty in Newport Beach. Alexis Furze, MD, and a facial plastic surgeon, uses the top standard measures to straighten your nasal septum and treat your problem. Contact the office to learn more.

What is a deviated septum?

Usually, a nasal septum is a bone and cartilage that divides the nose in half. A deviated septum means a crooked nasal septum. Naturally, a deviated septum is common with many individuals and not necessarily with symptoms.

The most common symptom of a deviated septum is difficulty breathing, usually affecting one side of the nose. Other symptoms may include a blocked nose, frequent sinus infections, nosebleeds, and noisy breathing during sleep.

Patients with severe symptoms need to undergo septoplasty to improve and restore their breathing and appearance.

What is septoplasty?

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure to straighten a crooked nasal septum. Your provider performs the procedure to straighten and reposition the nasal septum into a central position. Depending on your concerns, your provider may combine the procedure with rhinoplasty to meet the aesthetic needs of your nose.

Who needs a septoplasty?

Many individuals do not have a straight nasal septum; however, not everyone needs a  septoplasty. Dr. Furze recommends septoplasty only when it affects your breathing, disrupting your life quality.

What to expect during a septoplasty procedure?

During your initial consultation, your provider examines your medical history, carries out a physical exam, takes pictures of your nose, and discusses your expectations. He also highlights the benefits and risks of the surgery to prepare you.

Dr. Furze may also advise stop taking aspirin or ibuprofen medications before or after surgery. You may also avoid smoking during and after surgery.

The procedure involves your provider making incisions inside your nose and sometimes cutting through the bones and cartilage to reposition them. In some cases, your provider may require you to add spreader grafts to straighten the septum effectively.

Septoplasty occurs under anesthesia to prevent any discomfort during the procedure. After correcting the septum, your provider then uses sutures to close the nose back.

What to consider after septoplasty?

After your procedure, it is best to do the following

  •         Avoid blowing your nose for some time
  •         Avoid very hot food and alcohol
  •         Quit smoking for the first few months
  •         Rest with your head slightly elevated
  •         Avoid strenuous activities

What is recovery like for septoplasty patients?

You can expect mild swelling in the face after septoplasty, headache, and nasal obstruction. Your provider may recommend painkillers to relieve pain and discomfort.
